Jardines del Rey (Garden of the King) Archipelago lies just off the northern coast of Cuba. Some of its cays are larger than some countries of the world and make it one of the awesome fishing destinations in the Cuban Caribbean. The north portion of this archipelago is surrounded by a coral wall 248 miles long, the second largest barrier reef in the world. There are canals among the cays and islets where large Tarpon travel through. This area had been known as the Tarpon Paradise of the North Coast of Cuba, a world class destination for Tarpon on the fly. It is an excellent and privileged area of marine life.

Fishing Gardens of the King is characterized by migratory tarpon fishing from March to August. While big tarpon swagger in the flats other species of trophy fish abound including bonefish, ´cudas and jacks.

The climate is warmer than in the Bahamas with an average temperature of 75 degrees F in January. These fair weather conditions during the mid-winter months are very good for fly fishing the GOK. August, with an average temperature of 83 degrees F, is the hottest month in Cuba. There is invariably a pleasant sea breeze but, occasionally, stronger winds can occur. The fishing season runs from November until August, thus avoiding the hurricane period during September and October. The beginning of the season from November to January is very good This is a really nice time to plan a trip to Cayo Largo, as the weather is much warmer in Cuba than in Europe or Northern America.

Peak fishing season is from February to June, when all species are present in the area. Tarpon, bones, permit and jacks are encountered during these months. The migratory tarpon, up to 80-100lbs (average 15-30lbs), are regularly spotted and shots at permit are very frequent. Our peak season is the best time to try the Gland Slam. Numerous Grand Slams are achieved each season as well as a few Super Grand Slams (Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit and Snook). In the late part of the season, the weather gets hot but the fishing is still very productive, especially for tarpon and permit. Fishing for bonefish is also very good in the morning and in the evening. Statistics indicate a very surprising summer phenomenon - that the same number of fish are caught during the hot months as in the peak season but by half the number of rods. This illustrates how fabulously productive the summer months can be for anglers.

70 hp engine on new Dolphin Super skiff is used to shuttle you between the best fishing locations in the GOK. Fish are seen rolling in schools and the skiff position themselves ahead for intercepting casts. There are also wide flat areas 3 – 6 feet deep where fish are fairly easy to spot in the crystal-clear waters. Bonefish lay in huge areas of flats and mangrove vegetation by boat or wading. The region abounds n Permit in deeper waters called floaters weighting up to 40 pounds.
