A smorgasbord of family adventures ranges from wilderness horse trekking to quad biking; water sports from jet boating to white-water rafting. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a mind-expanding daylong hike, which exposes walkers to alpine meadows, active volcanoes, mountain springs, lava flows, emerald lakes and volcanic deserts. Tongariro Lodge’s generous hospitality and cuisine- which captures the essence of New Zealand specialties and game- are equally renowned. Founded by legendary angler and guide Tony Hayes in 1982 Tongariro Lodge Guides have catered for the world’s who’s who of fly-fishing.

OUR EXPERIENCED GUIDES PROVIDE ACCESS TO OVER 40 RIVERS AND 3 LAKES Tongariro Lodge guides offer the most diverse range of rainbow and brown trout fly fishing opportunities in New Zealand.

Through the experience of our guiding teams, special access to many rivers that run through private land has been acquired. Every year our guides get out and explore more “waters” for our clients to enjoy. This area truly is a vast fishery that can provide the trout fishing experience of a lifetime year round to the beginner and expert alike.

HELI - FISHING

Tongariro Lodge guides are the most experienced heli-fishing operators in New Zealand.

From October to April, guests enjoy this ultimate New Zealand wilderness fly fishing experience from the Lodge. Tongariro Lodge has special access to large areas of private land that provides anglers with helicopter access to fourteen wilderness rivers, and includes up to 60 kilometres of trophy fly-fishing for brown and rainbows.
A New Zealand heli-fishing day entails anglers and guide being picked up at the lodge in Turangi on the southern shores of Lake Taupo by one of our helicopters and experienced pilots. Enjoy a majestic flight into the nearby ranges, and be dropped right on the riverbank of a stunningly beautiful river that’s yours to enjoy for the day. Anglers and guide fish their way upstream, spotting, stalking and fishing to some of the biggest trophy trout in the country. The helicopter picks you up at the end of the day and whisks you back to the lodge. Overnight heli-fishing and camping can also be arranged.

RAFT - FISHING

From December 1 until May 31 wilderness raft fishing on the upper Tongariro can be superb.
The remote head waters of the Tongariro can only be accessed by river raft and your white water river rafting guide will row you and your fly-fishing guide down numerous rapids to access crystal clear pools and unspoiled runs. For anglers seeking uncrowded waters and large numbers of quality fish this can be trout heaven.

From January to March excellent Taupo raft fishing can also be had targeting large lake run browns and rainbows with big cicada imitation dry flies in the lower reaches from the lodge to the lake. Some of the biggest browns in New Zealand are taken in this section of the Tongariro each summer.

There are three accommodation types available for guests, each with private facilities and its own secluded sunny terrace with views of the Tongariro River or mountains beyond.

There are three great accommodation choices at the lodge:

*Executive Villa: Enjoy our most luxurious 5-star villa, with 4 bedrooms, all with their own ensuite, expansive decks with an outside fireplace. Magnificently appointed furnishings and entertainment appliances. Fine art and Maori artifacts adorn the walls of this exquisite Villa. *Three Bedroom Villas: Magnificently appointed 2-4 bedroom villas that provide plenty of space along with quality furnishings. Enjoy separate, open plan lounge and dining areas with snug armchairs, deep drapes and flat screen television. Each villa has private bathroom and ensuite facilities, a full kitchen, laundry and free High-speed Wi-Fi. King beds and a variety of bedding options are available upon request. * One Bedroom Chalets: For a less expensive option guests can enjoy the original Tongariro Lodge chalets.
