The Sheefish is the largest member of the Whitefish family. They can grow to as large as 60 lbs and over 40 inches in length. They are a valuable subsistence resource to rural Alaskans, and a popular sport fish. The sheefish, called inconnu (unknown fish) by early explorers, is found only in arctic and subarctic North America and Asia. The body profile is streamlined and the color is silvery with a darker coloration on the dorsal surface. It often displays a phosphorescent purple sheen when taken from the water. A cousin of the salmon, it reaches a yard in length and is an aggressive fish to hunt. It strikes with force and speed. If you are not on your game it could rip the pole right out of your hands.
